Resetting the clock on failing infrastructure

With few innovations in DWV piping materials over the last several decades, cast iron and PVC remain top choices for replacing and expanding DWV piping systems.

Which one is right for you depends on your building and budget.

Once you make your choice, you can expect a DWV system that’s properly designed and built with good quality materials to last 50 or more years in your multifamily property.

DWV Replacement Piping Materials

Cast Iron

Tried and true, American-made cast iron is as reliable as it gets. It’s structurally solid and naturally sound insulating. Due to its rigidity, it’s the primary material for nearly all high-rise DWV systems.

PVC

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most common DWV piping solution in garden or walk-up style communities. Owners choose it because structural bracing and noise are less of an issue than in taller buildings, and it costs less than cast iron. PVC is also a good choice for long lateral runs of DWV piping because it typically experiences less build-up due to its smoother interior surface.

Hybrid Solutions

Some communities seek to benefit from the best of both worlds, choosing cast iron for their larger vertical stacks and PVC for the laterals leading from their fixtures.
